The VBCF Advanced Microscopy Facility (AdvMicro) provides access, training and technical support for researchers to an expanding inventory of cutting edge optical imaging techniques. We also have an R&D lab that develops tailored and novel optical microscopy solutions.

We offer data analysis services for next-generation sequencing data and develop innovative and intuitive software solutions for biological experiments requiring image and video processing as well as hardware-related programming. Our specific data management and processing tools help researchers to translate biological results into new insights. We also offer trainings and consultations in the areas of bioinformatics, statistics and programming.

Electron Microscopy

The Electron Microscopy Facility (EM) offers a variety of preparation techniques for biological samples of diverse origin. We examine the complex architecture of macromolecules, cells and tissues at nanometer resolution using state-of-the-art conventional and cryo-techniques for specimen preparation and visualization. Whether you are interested in quick sample screening or high resolution 2D or 3D imaging, we can help. Furthermore, we provide the processing of purified molecules for conventional and cryo-electron microscopy as well sample preparation for scanning electron microscopy.

Next Generation Sequencing

The goal of the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Core Facility is to provide cutting edge next generation sequencing technology to its users. Next Generation Sequencing has become a key analysis method for biological research. The capacity to expand analysis from more or less defined genomic regions to genome wide studies has boosted the pace of research discovery and enabled researchers to obtain a global view on biological processes. Advice and guidance of sequencing projects are offered by our team that relies on years of experience with sequencing systems and sequencing data analysis. All common sequencing applications are supported and the development of novel methods and protocols encouraged

Plant Sciences

The Plant Sciences Facility (PlantS) operates 22 high quality state-of-the-art and highly specialized plant growth chambers and provides professional support to research groups at the VBC. Within spare capacities all services are also available for external customers.

The Preclinical Imaging Facility (pcIMAG) provides comprehensive multimodal MR imaging. The main focus of the facility is in-vivo mouse imaging, while we welcome other smaller model organisms as well. Special emphasized is placed on state-of-the art data acquisition and processing.

Preclinical Phenotyping

Phenotyping the Mouse is becoming increasingly important in the complex analysis of genetically manipulated mice. The Preclinical Phenotyping Facility (pcPHENO) at VBCF, Vienna was established in September, 2012. Its primary objective is to provide centralized support and services to VBC investigators developing and studying genetically modified animal models relevant to human diseases.

Our core services include molecular cloning, protein production and purification, and biophysical characterization of proteins. We also offer services surrounding the CRISPR/Cas9 genome engineering technology.
